Rotating Moons
Project type
Sculpture
Date
September 2023
The piece created is made of two types of wood, Pine and Cherry, wood glue, and gold metal chains and hooks. The piece itself is created of large circles intertwined together, two large platforms and three hanging pieces. The intertwined circles are a representation of an ouroboros, something that represents an eternity, and in other imagery is often depicted as a snake eating itself. Within the circles hang three moons, a crescent, a full, and another crescent. The circles are wrapped about the moon phases, something eternal wrapped around something in constant change. The idea of using an ouroboros, connected to the platform, shows a solid form, something that could move, but is grounded. The ouroboros is something I see in a lot of works and the meaning and message behind it resonates with me as an artist and as a person. Its representation in religion also fascinates me and using moon phases with it created a very unique picture and contrast with what this imagery is normally associated with.
The phases of the moon, or the moon itself, is a constant in my recent work. The moon can have a variety of meanings, and in this it represents a new beginning, something changing, but for the better. These phases are wrapped in eternity or an eternal loop. A solid structure that will not move with an even more structured base. The moons, the intertwined circles, and the solid base, are all individual pieces that come together to create this sculpture, “Rotarting Moons”. A name derived from the moons that are in constant rotation, constant movement, when viewing the sculpture.
